The January issue of Psychiatric Times has one of the mostcomprehensive and inclusive pieces that I've seen on the challengesthat we will face as a country in helping our soldiers deal withreturning to civilian life. According to the article, there have been1,275 evacuations from Iraq due to psychiatric problems, as well as 53suicides among soldiers in Iraq. These are just the stats for activesoldiers. Many psychiatric disorders like PTSD don't even makethemselves known until months later.
This is a complex and multi-faceted issue. Read the article,
Hidden Combat Wounds: Extensive, Deadly, Costly
. And continue to check back here for more stories and information.
UPDATE:
The San Francisco Chronicle has
another piece worth a read
. Theirs tells the story of the "Marlboro Man" who famously appeared innewspapers across the country in 2004. He is now back stateside andbattling the inner-demons of post traumatic stress disorder.
