A great deal of controversy has sprung up in the UK after the BBC aired the television documentary The Dyslexia Myth, questioning whether dyslexia exists.
Parents were understandably upset. In working with parents of children with learning differences, I have seen them face many challenges. Firstly going through the ordeal of trying to figure out what is going on with their child, and overcoming those cynics who say that a child is "just lazy" or "just needs to work harder;" words that can hurt a child's self-esteem and self-confidence. These parents must then navigate a complicated world of bureaucracy to try to get their child the assistance they need, while trying to understand the complexities of their child's differences themselves.
To a parent of a child with learning difference, hearing someone say that dyslexia does not exist is like telling a parent their child is "stupid." And that is simply wrong.
